Small to medium enterprises can’t necessarily afford to buy new PCs for everyone every year or two. However, PCs seem to get old pretty quick these days don’t they? After a year or two, they seem so slow and flaky compared to newer PCs. That’s because new PCs are getting so much better every year, right?
Wrong. They do get better, but not that much better.
Now, more than ever, PCs run slower and slower with each passing day. Why? Because in today’s networked world, two things happen:
1. PCs are open to infection by viruses and spyware (even if anti-virus software is installed). These parasitic pieces of software are much smarter than they used to be – they no longer advertise themselves by crashing your PC or displaying strange messages. Instead they sit quietly in the background doing their dirty work. Sometimes this dirty work is relatively benign, sometimes not, but regardless of whether it is benign or not, they generally chew up CPU time and network bandwidth.
2. New software is so much more widely available, and much of it is free. Over time, your staff will most likely install many small pieces of software, some of which they need, and many that they don’t. Some programs sit harmlessly, consuming small amounts of hard disk space. These are not really a problem. Others install services and background processes that chew up valuable CPU time and memory. These will gradually degrade the performance and stability of the PC.
Of these two major causes of degraded performance, number 1 is now by far the most chronic.
Even PCs with a decent level of spyware and virus protection are not immune. The presence of some spyware is extremely difficult to detect, and expensive to remove.
What can Netralia do about this parlous state of affairs?
We recommend that each PC is completely reformatted and the operating system completely reinstalled on a periodic basis. This is obviously 100% guaranteed to remove all existing unwanted programs, including viruses and spyware. It is also much cheaper than trying to detect and remove all instances of these unwanted visitors from the machine (this could take literally days per machine, and is still very unlikely to be 100% effective).
Netralia calls this “PC Rebirthing” and offers a fixed price for each individual PC Rebirthing (except in exceptional circumstances). Netralia can also maintain a register of your PC asset base and schedule and organize PC Rebirthing for all of your PCs according to a predefined Rebirthing schedule (e.g. once every 6 months or once every 12 months).
PC Rebirthing can dramatically extend the lifetime of your existing PCs and save you significant amounts of money.
